At T-CReDO, he promotes the clinical and translational research of medical seeds generated in Tsukuba. Formerly, he was a senior researcher at the drug discovery research divisions (Neuroscience), Eisai Co., Ltd, a visiting researcher at the Max-Planck Institute for Psychiatry, an associate professor of the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Tokyo, Director of the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Tokyo Branch Hospital, Deputy Director of the Clinical Research Support Center and a hospital professor at the University of Tokyo Hospital before assigning his current position in 2015. During that time, he launched the Clinical Research Support Center at the University of Tokyo Hospital and T-CReDO, and the National University Hospitals Clinical Research Promotion Initiative, among others. 
He has served as a member of the PMDA Scientific Committee, the Review Board for Medical Devices and In Vitro Diagnostics of the Pharmaceutical Affairs and Food Sanitation Council of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), and the Review Board for Regenerative Medicine Products and Biomaterials Safety of MHLW.

Dr. Koyanagi is a business development professional with hands-on experience in supporting startups in the medical field. At the University of Tsukuba, he co-founded Research Studio powered by SPARK, a platform for fostering medical entrepreneurs. Also, at Kyoto University, he worked on industry-university collaborative projects such as OncoPrime, KBBM, PRiME-R, and HVC KYOTO. Prior to his academic career as an entrepreneurship trainer, he worked as a marketing and project management specialist in multinational corporations and start-ups. He received post-doctoral training at Stanford University and a PhD from Osaka University.

After graduating from the University of Tsukuba and completing a clinical training of internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Tsukuba Hospital, he has been a member of the faculty of Medicine. Since 2014, he has joined the Tsukuba Clinical Research and Development Organization (T-CReDO). Since 2020, he has assumed a vice director of the Translational Research Education and Promotion Center.
He conducts and promotes translational and clinical researches. He works on a trans-endocardial injection system for cardiac regeneration, wearable ECG, medical-industrial consortium of automobile, etc. He drives a clinical exposure for industry-academia collaboration and medical entrepreneurship training program (Research Studio).

After graduating from the University of Tsukuba and completing a clinical training of  training at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, he became a specialist in orthopedic surgery. In his specialty of spine, he is a supervising physician of the Japanese Society of Spine and Spinal Cord Diseases and continues to study in his daily clinical practice now.
In 2016, he was transferred to the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) as a reviewer for 7 years, and was involved in practical approval review of medical devices.
In 2019, he received a certificate from Stanford Biodesign Global faculty in training program and is actively participating in biodesign activities in Japan as a global faculty. 
He is strongly interested in activities related to medical-engineering collaboration of medical devices.

After graduating from the University of Tsukuba, he worked as a clinician in the field of neurosurgery, including stroke, brain tumors, emergency medicine, rehabilitation, etc., and was engaged in research on stereotactic radiotherapy for brain tumors.
In 2017, he was seconded to PMDA as a reviewer for 3 years, and was involved in the wide range of practical approval review from anti-cancer drugs to medical devices or regenerative products.
After returning to Tsukuba in 2020, he has worked on translational research and supporting the exit strategy of clinical research. He is also involved in new development and start-up projects for several pharmaceuticals, medical devices and regenerative medicine products based on seeds from universities.

He completed his initial training at Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital and the second semester training program in gastrointestinal surgery, and obtained surgical specialty. After that, He engaged in research on liver regeneration and transplantation immunity in graduate school.
He has been working in his current position since 2019, supporting exit strategies for translational research and clinical research. He is also involved in the development of new drugs based on seeds from universities.
